Yacht Charter on the French Riviera in October: How to Plan a Day at Sea

The yachting season on the French Riviera does not end with August. In October, it is still possible to plan trips at sea from the ports of Saint-Tropez, Cannes, Antibes and other coastal towns, although the approach differs from a summer charter.

The main rule is to keep the itinerary flexible and make the final decision based on the latest marine forecast, the captain’s recommendations and any applicable navigation restrictions.

For a short cruise, a full day on a yacht or several days along the Côte d’Azur, October can be an interesting option if the practical details are organised properly in advance.

In October, itinerary flexibility is especially important

When planning a yacht trip in summer, clients often start with a specific itinerary. In autumn, it is more practical to begin with the date, departure port and duration of the trip, and finalise the route closer to departure.

Météo-France publishes dedicated marine forecasts for the French Riviera coastline, including the Port-Camargue — Saint-Raphaël and Saint-Raphaël — Menton areas, as well as forecasts for individual ports including Saint-Tropez, Cannes, Antibes, Nice and Menton.

This is particularly important in autumn. Météo-France specifically warns that southern France can experience épisodes méditerranéens during this period — episodes of intense rainfall that can sometimes change weather conditions quickly.

A long-range forecast should therefore never replace a final weather check shortly before departure.

In practical terms, it is better to have a main itinerary and a shorter alternative that the captain can recommend depending on the weather and sea conditions.

How to choose the right format

October is particularly well suited to several different charter durations.

A few hours or half a day

This format works well for guests who want to combine time at sea with activities on shore. It avoids structuring the entire day around the yacht and is easier to adapt to changing weather.

A full day

A full day provides more opportunities to cruise along the coastline, stop for lunch or spend time at anchor, provided sea conditions are suitable.

Several days

A multi-day itinerary requires more detailed preparation. Overnight berths, port operating arrangements, berth availability, the planned itinerary and possible alternatives should all be confirmed in advance.

The Port of Saint-Tropez, for example, continues to welcome visiting vessels in autumn. Under its official tariff schedule, the period after Les Voiles already falls within the shoulder season, while certain winter contracts begin on 15 October. The port also accepts requests for short-term berths through its online system.

At Port Vauban in Antibes, requests can also be made for short-term, winter and long-term berthing, and the port publishes separate October opening hours for its services.

This confirms that port infrastructure continues to operate after the high season, but a specific berth always needs to be confirmed separately.

Which departure point is most convenient?

The choice of port should depend not only on where the yacht is based, but also on the programme on shore.

If the trip is centred around Saint-Tropez, it makes sense to consider departure from the western part of the Riviera. For Cannes and Antibes, the itinerary can be built around the central coastline, while guests staying closer to Nice or Monaco may find it more convenient to use ports further east.

There is no need to cover a large section of the coastline in a single day. In many cases, choosing one area and leaving more time to relax on board provides a more comfortable experience.

The final itinerary should always be agreed with the captain. In addition to the weather, local navigation and anchoring rules must be taken into account.

The Préfecture maritime de la Méditerranée publishes separate regulations for different sections of the coastline. In Cannes, for example, seasonal rules governing navigation, anchoring and diving apply in certain areas from 1 October 2026.

An itinerary that was possible during the summer or in a previous year should therefore not automatically be assumed to remain valid.

What to check before booking a yacht

Before confirming the trip, it is worth checking the main practical conditions:

  • which yacht is actually available on the selected date;
  • from which port boarding is possible;
  • how long the charter is scheduled to last;
  • which costs are included and which are charged separately;
  • which itinerary the captain recommends for the season;
  • whether the required port or anchorage stops are possible;
  • what conditions apply in case of unfavourable weather;
  • until what point the itinerary or date can be changed.

It is particularly important not to base the decision solely on photographs or a yacht’s summer description.

In October, a specific vessel may be in a different port, preparing for the winter period or unavailable for charter. Yacht availability and the conditions for a specific trip should therefore be checked for the selected dates.

A yacht as part of an autumn trip to the Côte d’Azur

In October, a day at sea is best viewed not as a fixed activity on a rigid date, but as part of a more flexible stay on the French Riviera.

Guests can stay in Saint-Tropez, Cannes, Antibes, Nice or near Monaco and include a yacht day within the broader trip.

If the forecast is favourable, the outing can proceed according to the agreed itinerary. If conditions change, the captain may recommend adjusting the route, shortening the passage or choosing a different area.

This approach makes it possible to enjoy the autumn coastline without trying to reproduce the summer charter format.

What to define in advance

Before looking for a yacht in October, it is useful to define four main parameters:

  • the date of the trip;
  • the number of guests;
  • the preferred duration;
  • the preferred departure area.

Available yachts, charter conditions, possible departure ports and a realistic seasonal itinerary can then be checked accordingly.

The more flexible the programme remains until the latest marine forecast is available, the easier it is to organise a comfortable day at sea in October.
